Visiting the Fishkill Outdoors
Summer Activities in Fishkill are filled with fun in mountains and in the fields. There are hiking opportunities and landmarks that are a must-see for travelers and those out on expeditions to see where history has been made. It’s great for those who live in the metropolitan area and have little access to the chances that Fishkill can offer them. The area is so close, but the amount of activities available at little to no cost are infinite. Fishkill Ridge and the surrounding peaks are known for their impressive view of the overall Hudson River Valley.

There are local orchards as well as parks and recreation centers. Hudson Highlands, 1900-acre park, is good for hiking. Moreover, the Highlands contain an abundance of wildlife. The sightseeing is incredible. Falcons and other rare species have been reported seen there.

On Fishkill Ridge, there is a place where you can join the acres, which make about about 1000 altogether, in the Hudson State Park. Here, you can also reach the summit of Mount Beacon. There is access to two of the highest peaks east of the Hudson River. Those concerned with the detrimental effects that the industrial development takes on this Ridge, should be glad to hear that there is a group called the Fishkill Ridge Caretakers, that makes sure the streams stay clean. Most people enjoy walking the stream and seeing the beauty of Fishkill’s clean water.

Be aware. There are trails with different names such as “Dome” and “White Trail”. Some spots within the trails of Fishkill Ridge are designated by high school students or younger adults for partying. It is lower in the mountains, due to their rush to indulge, or laziness to continue hiking. At a “Point 3”, there is an incredible view of Fishkill’s primary resevior. There is a lake that is dammed, containing about 250 million gallons of water.

Also, on the trails, there is an opportunity to see the Mount Beacon Fire Tower, which people are in the process of preserving. “Point 4” is where you reach the spot to view this tower. There is a reservoir to enjoy and when you get to an area fenced off, there will be a tower farms. After passing the fences, there will be a small field. Here, you can see a monument dedicated to the Daughters of the American Revolution. It is called the Melzingah Chapter Signal Beacon Fire Monument, dedicated to the signal fire that by warning of the American troops, the American citizens were able to be notified of the British coming.

Each spot in the Fishkill Ridge Trail, and the other areas designating for hiking, walking, and sightseeing has a significance, whether it is historical or just a natural wonder. The orchards and other plants are a treat for those interested in gardening and horticulture. Outdoors FIshkill, in the mountains and trails, affords its visitors opportunities to see other towns and cities in the area, like Newburgh.
